School Story:

After leaving Regis, I taught at the Northwestern Military and Naval Academy for 8 mos in Lake Geneva, WI, then proceeded to work on an MS in Analytical Chemistry at UW-Milwaukee, which I received in 1972. After, I received a PhD from the UW-Madison in 1975 in Water Chemistry/Environmental Chemistry. I became immediately an assistant professor in environmental engineering sciences at the UMN in Mpls in Sept 1975 where I stayed in one capacity or another for 20 years (senior professor, Director of the Gray Freshwater Biological Institute). In 1995 I took on the Position of Chair and Distinguished Professor at Rutgers University in NJ not far from NYC. In 2001, I joined the research arm of the European Commission in Ispra, Italy on the shores of Lago Maggiore where I led a 70 member research group on water science, and later led the European Chemicals Bureau (ECB) of course on chemicals science and policy. On a trip back to Rutgers in Sept. 2001 I found myself in Northern NJ directly across from Manhattan at 9:00 AM when the WTC was hit by two airplanes and witnessed the ensuing events. What an experience this was and continued to be over the next days. I was on the first plane out of JFK to Europe 4 days later.

In 2008, I transferred to the EC's HQs in Brussels. Belgium serving as science advisor to the Joint Research Center and was main author of the organisation strategy to 2020. I retired from the European Commission in Oct 2012, and soon became Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Brussels where I was elected to the faculty in Hydrology, and to the faculty in Analytical, Environmental and Geo-Chemistry where I am today.
I married a Greek woman (from Athens) in 1994, we have two lovely girls, Zoi and Alexia, we live in a close-in suburb of Brussels, and have a lovely modern home in Greece in a village of Avlaki with clear views of 270 degrees overlooking the Aegean/Mediterranean Sea.
